1945 – 1965

Facts

Facts

Jarrett was born May 8, 1945 in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He started to play piano very early when he was just three. He undertook the study of classical music before moving to Boston when he was 15 to study briefly at the Berklee College of Music. Still in his teens, Jarrett intended to further his academic work in Paris before deciding to move to New York in 1964 and become a jazz musician.

He started to live the rich musical scene in New York attending several Jam Sessions with well known musicians being noticed. His first official tournee was with Art Blakey’s New Jazz Messengers recording also a very good session in California.

1966 – 1968

Facts

Facts

These period is very important for Keith Jarrett, he continues to play with Art Blakey and join the Charles Lloyd Quartet. Charles Lloyd was very active in the European jazz scene together with other American musicians ( George Russell, Don Cherry, etc..). North Europe was very attractive for jazz musician, and Stockholm was the first country outside USA where the young Keith jarrett played in 1966 at Golden Cyrkle. They played open mind and explored new directions in music all together, i really think this musical relationship between Lloyd and Jarrett was a spiritual thing that was able to free musical energy and starting to build the very musical core that will be developed from Jarrett in the following years.

This quartet is a good example of the fresh new attitude that jazz musicians where developing in this period, and will reach a good popularity in the world with several official releases. Forest Flower was a true commercial hit Charles Lloyd is a true philosopher, and his spiritual attitude toward music will have an important part in Jarrett style.

Jarrett also starts to play in different trios together with Charlie Haden (cb), Paul Motian (dr), Bob Moses (dr), Gus Nemeth (b), Bob Ventrelo (dr), Aldo Romano (dr)

These years are very rich of important sessions. The main focus is on Charles Lloyd tour in Europe, which gave origin to many interesting official releases. There was a true telepathic-like understanding between musicians and Jarrett had a lot of space to express his musical sensibility.

1969-1971

Facts

Facts

Towards the end of ’60 ‘s Keith Jarrett and Jack Dejohnette left Charles Lloyd Quartet due to financial and artistic issues. It seems the last concert performed by jarrett toghether with the quartet was held on early summer 1969 in  Wilson Auditorium, University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, OH, USA.

Jarrett started to tour with his trio ( August “Gus” Nemeth and Bob Ventrello), during one of these concerts, Miles and his wife together with Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette came to listen Jarrett after playing at Salle Pleyel. Keith jammed together with Jack and Dave.

(from keithjarrett.org)

1969 was really full of trio performances, around Europe and soon after Jarrett started to play with Miles. Jarrett had to play an electric instrument ( Fender contempo organ, and fender rhodes piano) and stop playing ballad. He was very critical with Miles band and music, but really appreciated the approach that Miles had towards music. There are a couple of really nice interview about this period released by Jarrett. He started alternating with Chick Corea and after Chick left the band he played both electric instruments.

In 1970 Jarrett performed his first solo concert in the form we well know, the concert was in Apollo Theatre 24 March 1970

My reason for finally accepting to play, was based on the love of his playing (Keith Jarrett on Miles Davis Story)

  1. Jarrett about joining the band (Miles Davis Story)
  2. Jarrett about the very slow beat and Miles Davis

There are a lot of documents about Jarrett collaboration with Miles and a lot of sessions in different places than typical jazz venues ( stadiums, auditoriums and so on).

1971 – 1979

Facts

Facts

After leaving Miles, Jarrett musical horizons were broadening. He started to work with his American Quartet and also started another collaboration with an European Quartet. Also in this period after the first solo recordings ( Facing you ECM in 1971 that will start a unique collaboration between Jarrett and the European label) , jarrett will explore the solo form to reach his maturity with Koln Concert (1974) and Sun Bear Concerts (1976).

These years were a musical laboratory where Jarrett was able to explore all his main dimensions. Free and open minded exploration with the American Quartet, lyrical approach to composition with the European Quartet and the solo piano explorations.

1979 – 1989

Facts

Facts

Jarrett started this decade with the release of Celestial Hawk for Orchestra percussion and piano, recorded live at Carnegie hall.  This work is a bridge beetwen classical music and instinctual improvisation.  In the same year, he released also Nude Ants with the European Quartet and Sacred Hymns inspired by Gurdejeff theory on music and spirit.

Starting from 1983 Jarrett begins a long collaboration with Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette, building a true “Real Book” of American Jazz Standards, there are a couple of nice interviews where Jarrett express his own philosophy on this trio that is a part of history in the jazz music.

Also this period is very prolific and full of different music nuances. Jarrett releases 2 very personal albums like Spirits and Book of ways, recorded in solitude, expressing a devotional feeling in music.  In 1988 starts to record canonical classical music starting with was Bach’s Das Wohltemperierte Klavier Buch I, followed by his Goldberg Variations .

1990 – 1999

Facts

Facts

The decade starts with the record The Cure 1990 and Bye Bye Blackbird in 1991 recorded as a memorial to Miles Davis. This period is strongly characterized by Jarrett performing and recording classical music.  Noteworthy Michaela Petri and Jarrett records and his award-winning Shostakovich: 24 Preludes and Fugues Op. 87 in 1992.

Also another gem of solo repertoire was recorded in 1991 the Vienna concert maybe the most classical solo concert ever recorded by jarrett.

Jarrett standards trio activity went on with some very good performance and a legendary 6 cd  box set recording released in 1995 , The blue note sessions. This decade is also one of the darkest period for jarrett, he was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome. He stopped performing live for three years. During this forced pause ECM released some great recordings  in solo and trio ( La scala, tokyo 96) and also a very unique performance recorded at home : The melody at night with you. This record is completely different from any other Jarrett record, is lyrical, introspective with amazing interpretations of traditional songs and jazz ballads. In 1999 he started to perform again and tour around the world with his trio. Later will also be released a session recorded soon after Jarrett recovery After the fall.

2001 – 2010

Facts

Facts

The new century starts with Jarrett again in an amazing physical and creative state of mind. During the first year of the century, the trio released several albums including again standards performances (Up for it, The out of towners) as well as solo recordings like Inside Out and Always let me go with a completely improvisation approach.

The trio music is still fresh, and still exploring new music, new standards, creating every night something different even after more than 25 years.

In 2007, My Foolish Heart: Live at Montreux appeared (it was recorded in 2001 in Montreaux and i was there that night), commemorating the trio’s 25th anniversary. Soon after we have a  new Jarrett milestone in solo piano , the incredible  Carnegie Hall Concert that settled another step towards Jarrett research for creativity in solo performance. This record is truly something new and different in Jarrett musical production.

The decade is closed with another release from ECM Paris/London solo concerts.

2011 – 2017

Facts

Facts

This is the last period, closed with a concert in February 2017 in solo piano at Carnegie Hall. After this last concert there were a lot of news about upcoming concerts, but everytime there was a cancellation. There are growing voices about Jarrett problems maybe again with chronique fatigue syndrome, and again ECM is releasing new records, maybe waiting and hoping for Jarrett back on the stage.

Anyway there are still great performances and records in these 7 years. His trio recorded at the Luzern Concert Hall in July of 2009; the concert was released as Somewhere in May of 2013. Then again that year ECM released NoEnd another home studio recording from 1986 very close to ‘Spirits’ with Jarrett performing tablas, recorder, electric guitar, bass, and piano.  In June of 2014, more 2007 duet sessions with Haden were released as Last Dance.

For Jarrett 70th Birthday ECM released 2 albums, one classical music recording (Bartok and Barber’s piano concertos), and a unique solo performance for the first time with selections from different concerts in solo, creating a smooth path through these different concerts , the record was called Creation. In someway has a deep link with Darkintervals, it seems again a pantheistic and mystic hymn to music. The record contains  carefully handpicked and  sequenced selections from Jarrett’s performances in Tokyo, Toronto, Rome, and Paris.

In 2016 was released a 4 CD boxset from 1996 perfomances in solo in Italy (Genova, Torino, Ferrara and Modena) : A Multitude of Angels.  The year 2018 saw the release of La Fenice, a double album documenting his solo piano concert at the Gran Teatro la Fenice in Venice, Italy, from July 2006. The release of La Fenice coincided with Jarrett making history as the first jazz musician to receive the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the International Festival of Contemporary Music of the Biennale di Venezia. The award was previously presented to such contemporary composers as Luciano Berio, Pierre Boulez, György Kurtág, Sofia Gubaidulina, and Steve Reich.
