On this CD, Jarrett turns in a very eclec-tic set at Shelly's Manne-Hole in Hollywood, careening through a variety of idioms where his emerging individuality comes through in flashes. He covers Bob Dylan's "My Back Pages" -- which actually came out as a single on the Vortex label -- in an attractive, semi-funky style reminiscent of Vince Guaraldi. "Pretty Ballad" delivers a strong reflective dose of Bill Evans, while "Moving Soon" is chaotic free jazz. By the time we reach "New Rag," we begin to hear the distinctive Jarrett idiom of the later trios, but then, "Old Rag" is knockabout stride without the stride. As an example of early, unfocused Jarrett, this is fascinating material. ~ AllMusic | A

The Allmusic review by Thom Jurek awarded the album 4 stars, stating, "Hamburg '72 is not only an excellent archival recording that documents one of jazz's most capable, sophisticated trios, it is expansive, inspiring modern jazz at its best, and it continues to resonate and inspire".[2] The Observer's Dave Gelly called it "an invaluable memento of an unrepeatable group".[3] On All About Jazz, John Kelman noted, "Hamburg '72 is a true milestone from the first of its 56 minutes to the last—a classic once lost, but now found again and sounding better than ever".[4] JazzTimes Thomas Conrad said, "By 1972, [Jarrett's] taut, dramatic timing, his personal harmonic concept and especially his touch were in place. He could already make piano notes hang forever in the air. He is equally capable of rocking the Funkhaus to its foundations"
1976 | 1 April 1976 | Keith Jarrett American Quartet | Y | Y | The Survivors' Suite | ECM 1085 | "The Survivors' Suite: Beginning" - 27:21 "The Survivors' Suite: Conclusion' - 21:18 | Regarding sound, venues, composition and orchestration, in a February 2009 interview conducted by Stuart Nicholson, Keith Jarrett stated that: (..) the whole music of The Survivors' Suite was written – and this is something that’s perhaps not known widely at all – ... that suite of pieces was written specifically for Avery Fisher Hall in New York, because I knew we were going to play there, I think it was opposite Monk as part of the festival. I knew from playing in Avery Fisher Hall many times the sound was not precise enough onstage to play fast tempos, [the sound] got blurred – so I decided to write the music for that evening. I felt it was important as an evening of music and that’s the first place we played it and it was written for that hall and then it became something we did at other places. So there was a rationale to that, but I think very few people would ever say, "Would you conceive, Mr. Jarrett, of writing for a specific hall?" I probably would say, "No." But the answer lies in the fact that I knew the hall to be very poor for certain kinds of things and if you listen to The Survivor’s Suite you’ll notice there are no fast tempos."

The album consists of improvisations on the massive Karl Joseph Riepp "Trinity" Baroque pipe organ, "the larger of the two Karl Joseph Riepp (1710-1775) organs at the Benedictine Abbey in Ottobeuren". The original double-LP was released by ECM Records in November 1976, only three months after being recorded.[1] The liner notes on the album state "No overdubs, technical ornamentations or additions were utilized, only the pure sound of the organ in the abbey is heard. Many of the unique effects, although never before used, were accomplished by pulling certain stops part way, while others remain completely open or closed. Amazingly, baroque organs have always had this capability."[4] The original double vinyl album was not reissued on compact disc until 2013. There is also a CD (Spheres, ECM 1302) with a selection of tracks: Spheres (1st, 4th, 7th, 9th Movement). The 3rd movement was used in the movie Sorcerer.

Keith asked, “What do you play?” “Triangle!” said Danny Johnson. Keith said yes and Danny came down with a big oriental rug and sat like a sitar player with his triangle. And that was the night we recorded Fort Yawuh."[3] One year later Johnson joined the group again on percussion (along Guilherme Franco) - this time for the studio recording of Treasure Island. 1967 | 1967 | Bob Moses | OK | Jim Pepper: tenor sax Larry Coryell: guitars, vocal, bass (Rock Fantasy) Steve Swallow: acousic, electric bass Keith Jarrett: piano, soprano sax * Bob Moses: drums | Y | Love Animal | Amulet Records | 1. Wholy Moses 2. The Worms Crawl in Blues 3. Smoke Gets in Your Eyes 4. Ntumba's Raindance 5. Rock Fantasy 6. Nowhere 7. Slum Funk 8. Dancing Bears | Recorded between 1967-68 at Vanguard Apostolic Studios in NYC. This was the time of the cult Jazz-Rock band 'The Free Spirits' with Larry Coryell, Jim Pepper, Chris Hills, Columbus Baker and Bob Moses. Moses was 19 years old and this (Love Animal) was supposed to be his first solo album. All this material previously unreleased except track 3. These young musicians were experimenting with powerful drugs and listening passionately to B.B. King, Robert Johnson, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, the Beatles, the Stones, Bob Dylan, The Band, Mongo Santamaria, Eddie Palmieri, Ray Baretto, Coltrane, Miles, Mingus, Monk, Bill Evans, Albert Ayler, Ornette Coleman, Eric Dolphy, and many more. Moses says "The music on Love Animal is raw, messy, over the top and mad eclectic but that was the truth of our lives at that time and tho we jumped musical styles like manic kangeroos, I can honestly say we also routinely pushed and expanded the boundaries of those territories to the limit. I.E. we never played any style in a stock, typical or lackadaisical way. And there are some great musical moments here, Keith Jarrett's profoundly beautiful solo on "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes", Steve Swallow's rich tone and across-the-bar phrasing on acoustic bass, Coryell's blistering other worldly guitar playing on "Dancing Bears" and for me most of all another chance to hear the great Native American saxophonist Jim Pepper who I believe is one of the most powerful, unique, soulful and under appreciated voices in the history of the music."
